Order of the Sinking Star Demo Platforms: Steam Only

FAQ

Can I play the Order of the Sinking Star demo on PS5 or Switch 2?
No. The demo never had a public console version. Every official demo announcement named Steam, no console demo was ever announced, and Nintendo's US store page for the game, checked on October 9, 2026, offers only the full game. Console owners got the full game at launch on October 8, 2026, not a demo.
Where can I download the demo now?
Nowhere, as of October 9, 2026. On that date the demo's Steam store page stopped resolving: Steam's store data returns nothing for it, the direct store URL loads Steam's front page, and the demo no longer appears in store search. No official announcement about the change was found, so the exact date it came down is not confirmed.
Was the demo ever playable anywhere other than Steam?
Yes, once: a playable demo ran at the PLAYISM booth at Tokyo Game Show 2026, held September 17 to 21 at Makuhari Messe Hall 7, booth 07-C06. It was an on-site machine running the Japan version, not a download. A PS5 version shown in July 2026 was a press hands-on event, not a public download.
Does the demo have an Xbox version or a Game Pass version?
No, and neither does the full game. Order of the Sinking Star launched on Steam, PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2 only; there is no Xbox, Game Pass, Mac or Linux version of any kind, so no demo could exist there either.
I played the demo before it came down — does my progress still carry over?
On Steam, yes: the official announcement states that demo progress carries over to the launch version on Steam, which has been out since October 8, 2026. Players report that saves do not carry between platforms, so a Steam demo save does nothing on PS5 or Switch 2.

The demo was Steam only. From its launch on June 15, 2026 the free Order of the Sinking Star demo existed as a download in exactly one place — Steam, for PC — and it never appeared as a PS5 download, a Switch 2 download, an Xbox or Game Pass version, or a Mac version. The single spot outside Steam where anyone could play it was a booth machine at Tokyo Game Show 2026. One current-status note up front: checked on October 9, 2026, the demo’s Steam store page no longer resolves.

Quick Answer

The demo was available on Steam and nowhere else. It was a free Steam download for PC that opened during Steam Next Fest on June 15, 2026, was extended twice, and was still live and linked from the full game’s store page as recently as September 24, 2026. The game’s console versions launched on October 8, 2026 without ever getting a demo, and the only non-Steam way to play it was the PLAYISM booth at Tokyo Game Show 2026 (September 17–21). Checked on October 9, 2026: the demo’s store page no longer resolves, and no official announcement explains why.

Which platforms ever had a demo?

The full game and the demo had different platform stories, and mixing them up is how console players end up hunting for a demo that was never made.

Platform Full game (since October 8, 2026) Demo Basis
PC via Steam Available, $29.99 Free demo, June 15, 2026 until at least September 24, 2026; store page no longer resolves as of October 9, 2026 Official Steam pages and store data
Steam Deck Steam Deck Verified (announced September 15, 2026) Ran on Deck — the demo’s own public-testing branch discussed 60fps on most levels on Steam Deck Official Steam posts
PlayStation 5 Launched October 8, 2026 Never existed as a download No announcement; only a press hands-on in July 2026
Nintendo Switch 2 Launched October 8, 2026 Never existed as a download Nintendo’s US store page shows only the full game (checked October 9, 2026)
Xbox / Game Pass Not announced at all Never existed Official platform list covers Steam, PS5, Switch 2 only
Mac / iPad / Linux No version of the game at all (Steam lists Windows only) Never existed Steam store data

Why every official demo statement named Steam

The demo was never a cross-platform initiative that skipped consoles — it was built for a Steam event and stayed inside it.

It opened on June 15, 2026 “for the duration of Steam Next Fest: June 2026 Edition,” which is a Steam-only festival, and the official FAQ promised no registration, sign-up or purchase. It was always a separate free Steam app (app 4597250) linked from the full game’s store page. When it kept outgrowing the festival, every extension came through Steam channels: a June 22 Steam news post pushed it to June 26, and an official X post announced a further run to July 31. Nothing about either extension mentions any platform but Steam.

The carry-over promise is the clearest tell. The official wording says progress “will carry over to the launch version of Order of the Sinking Star on Steam” — a sentence only worth writing if the demo itself is Steam-bound. That matters for players deciding where to start: on Steam, the hours spent in the demo survive into the full game, as the progress carry-over page lays out. Players report that saves do not carry between platforms at all, so there was never a path from a Steam demo to a console save.

When players asked directly in the community megathread, the answer they got was simply “It’s Steam only” — a player-reported reply rather than an official statement, but consistent with everything Thekla did publish. What was never published is just as telling: in four months of demo news, there is no announcement of a PS5 demo, a Switch 2 demo, or any console playtest, and absence of an announcement is the strongest evidence available — no official source ever states outright “there is no console demo.”

[!note] Treat the console side as an inference from silence plus checks: no console demo was ever announced, neither console’s store lists one, and press coverage of console versions described the full game only. That is how the evidence stands as of October 9, 2026.

What PS5 and Switch 2 owners got instead

Console owners were never offered a slice — they got the whole game on day one.

Both console versions launched alongside the PC version on October 8, 2026. Ahead of that, the only console playable anyone documented was a PlayStation Blog hands-on report from July 21, 2026, which was a press event: journalists played builds that were never distributed to players. Checked on October 9, 2026, Nintendo’s US store page for the game offers a single purchase — the $29.99 full game — with no demo tab or trial of any kind, and no PS5 demo listing could be found either.

That leaves the demo as a PC-only artifact by design. If your real question is which platform to buy on, the store pages are the answer: the full game is on Steam, PS5 and Switch 2, and there is no Xbox version at all.

The one place outside Steam: Tokyo Game Show 2026

If you count hardware in a hall as a platform, the demo had exactly one non-Steam home.

Official source: Bringing Order of the Sinking Star to Japan — September 10, 2026

The official announcement put a playable demo at the PLAYISM booth at Tokyo Game Show 2026, held September 17–21 at Makuhari Messe Hall 7, booth 07-C06, running the Japan version. Those dates are past as of this writing — the show closed on September 21, 2026 — so the booth was never a durable alternative to the download, just the one time the demo could be played without Steam.

[!tip] The description “Steam only with a Tokyo Game Show exception” is the accurate frame: one download platform, one booth, nothing else. No source describes any other public place the demo could be played.

Is the demo still available on Steam? Checked October 9, 2026

This is the part of the answer that changed recently, so it comes with the checks rather than a claim.

Check Result on October 9, 2026
Steam store data lookup for the demo (app 4597250) Returns nothing — while a control demo app on the same endpoint returns its data normally
Direct store URL for the demo page Loads Steam’s front page instead of a demo page
Steam store search for the game’s title Returns only the full game and its soundtrack; other titles’ demos do appear in the same search
Demo link in the full game’s store data Empty — it still pointed at the demo app as recently as September 24, 2026
Third-party launch coverage (October 8, 2026) The Red Reactions launch guide reports “No current Play Demo button was found on the Steam page”
Official announcement of any change None found — the Steam news hub has no removal post, and the demo’s last related post is from July 10, 2026

All six point the same way: as of October 9, 2026, the demo is not downloadable on Steam, and it was still live two weeks earlier. What cannot be stated is why or exactly when it came down. No official post marks the moment, and one third-party tracker still lists the app as available, so the disagreement stays on the table rather than being resolved in either direction.

[!warning] Do not tell readers the demo is “gone forever” or “still up” without rechecking that day. The store status flipped once already between September 24 and October 9, 2026, and no official statement pins down whether it is a removal, a temporary change, or something to be restored. Re-run the store checks above before repeating any status claim.

What demo players keep, and where to go next

For the players who did finish it, the demo was not throwaway time. Its 105 puzzles and their spread across three playable worlds are catalogued on the demo length and puzzle count page, and the demo walkthrough covers what Part 1 and Part 2 actually contained — the northern Heroes of Hauling, the eastern Mirror Isles, and a single level of the western Promise. If you are trying to place a room you remember, the demo map page puts the areas in order.

On Steam, the practical question — does any of it still count — has the official yes, and it has since October 8, 2026, when the full game launched. A demo save carried into the launch version starts you where you left off; players report nothing travels from Steam to a console, so console starts are fresh. The progress carry-over page keeps the wording of the promise and its limits together.

And if the demo was only ever a way to sample the game before buying, that decision is now moot: the full game is out on the three platforms it always planned for, and the demo’s platform story ended where it began — Steam, one booth in Chiba, and nothing else.

This page is re-checked whenever the demo’s store status changes or if a console demo is ever announced.
