FAQ

Where are the save files for Order of the Sinking Star on PC?
On Windows they are in %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Order of the Sinking Star\. On Linux through Steam Play they sit inside the Proton prefix at <SteamLibrary>/steamapps/compatdata/499170/pfx/. Both paths are documented by PCGamingWiki.
Does Order of the Sinking Star have Steam Cloud saves?
Yes. Steam Cloud is a listed feature of the full game, and the demo store page lists it as well, so progress syncs through your Steam account.
Does demo progress carry over to the full game?
Yes on Steam. Thekla confirmed it three times before launch, starting with the June 15, 2026 demo FAQ. Players report saves do not carry between platforms, so Steam is the only confirmed path.
Where are saves on Steam Deck or Linux?
Inside the Proton prefix: <SteamLibrary>/steamapps/compatdata/499170/pfx/. Steam Cloud sync data may also sit under ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/499170/.
How do I back up my save files?
Close the game, copy the whole Order of the Sinking Star folder out of Saved Games to a safe place, and copy it back to restore. Steam Cloud resyncs the folder during normal play.

Quick Answer

On PC, the saves live in one ordinary folder: Windows keeps them in %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Order of the Sinking Star\, Steam Play on Linux and Steam Deck keeps the same folder inside a Proton prefix at <SteamLibrary>/steamapps/compatdata/499170/pfx/, and Steam Cloud backs up both the demo and the full game through your Steam account. Demo progress carries over to the launch version on Steam — on Steam only.

Where are the save files on PC?

On Windows the answer is %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Order of the Sinking Star\ — one folder under your user profile, named exactly after the game. PCGamingWiki lists that same location for both the save game data and the configuration files, so your progress and your settings sit side by side, and nothing is stored in the game’s install directory.

On Linux, including a Steam Deck, the game runs through Steam Play (Proton), and Proton keeps every Windows game inside its own compatibility prefix: a folder under steamapps/compatdata/ named after the game’s Steam number, which for Order of the Sinking Star is 499170. The full path is <SteamLibrary>/steamapps/compatdata/499170/pfx/. Inside every prefix you will find a drive_c/ folder that mirrors a Windows filesystem, and that is where the Saved Games tree lives. PCGamingWiki stops at the prefix root rather than spelling out the subpath.

PCGamingWiki also notes a Linux-side Steam Cloud location: ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/499170/. That is sync data Steam manages for you, not a second save — treat the prefix as the real one.

[!note] The paths above are documented for the full game. The demo is a separate Steam listing and its exact folder is not documented on its own, so if you are still in the demo, expect the same layout but treat the precise demo path as unconfirmed.

How do I open the save folder on Windows?

Press Win + R, paste %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\ into the Run box and press Enter, then open the Order of the Sinking Star folder. That is the whole trip.

  1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Paste %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\ and press Enter. The %USERPROFILE% part expands to your own C:\Users\<name> folder, so this works no matter which account you are signed in with.
  3. Open Order of the Sinking Star — the files inside are your progress and your configuration.
  4. Prefer clicking? Open File Explorer, paste %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\ into the address bar, and press Enter for the same result.

If the Order of the Sinking Star folder does not exist, no save has been written under that Windows account yet — the folder appears the first time the game records progress for that user.

Does Steam Cloud back up my saves?

Yes. Steam Cloud is a listed feature of the full game’s Steam page, and the demo’s store page lists it as well, so both versions sync your progress through your Steam account. In practice that means your saves are not tied to one hard drive: play on one PC, and the same progress is waiting when you sign in on another machine or a Steam Deck.

To confirm sync is on for this game, right-click it in your Steam library, open Properties, and check the Steam Cloud section there. The store page’s feature list carries the same Steam Cloud line. On Linux, the local copy Steam uses for syncing is the ~/.steam/steam/userdata/<user-id>/499170/ folder PCGamingWiki notes — useful to know, but not something you should edit by hand.

[!tip] Steam Cloud covers the Steam version only. If you play on PS5 or Switch 2, your saves live with those consoles’ own systems, and nothing moves between the three — players report there is no cross-platform progress at all.

Does demo progress carry over to the full game?

Yes — on Steam. Thekla confirmed it three separate times before the October 8, 2026 launch, starting with the demo FAQ on June 15, 2026: “The progress you make in this demo will carry over to the launch version of Order of the Sinking Star on Steam later this year.” The June 22 news post repeated it, and the August 18 launch announcement said “Any progress made in the demo will carry over to the full game at launch!”

Three caveats keep the promise honest:

  • Steam only. Players report saves will not carry between platforms, so a demo played on PC does not feed a PS5 or Switch 2 copy. The full game exists on exactly three platforms, and there is no Xbox version at all — the platform list is covered on the Xbox page.
  • No achievements to carry. The demo has no achievements; the full game does. Whether demo play pops full-game achievements was never confirmed either way — the achievements guide tracks what is and is not known there.
  • No file copying required. The mechanism is documented only as saves being tied to your Steam account, but players do not report needing to copy anything by hand — carry-over happens on Steam’s side. One player-reported quirk: importing a demo save can skip you ahead to the north-east part of the map that normally requires meeting a condition first.

You can also see what your save actually contains: the load-game screen shows a “puzzles solved” counter, and a finished demo save reads 105 — though players report the count does not refresh immediately after solving a puzzle. The full breakdown of those numbers is on the demo length and puzzle count page, and the carry-over question has its own dedicated page: does demo progress carry over to the full game?.

What about saves on PS5 and Switch 2?

The Switch 2 version lists Save Data Cloud through Nintendo Switch Online on its official eShop page, so a Nintendo account with NSO gets cloud backups there. For PS5, no save-handling details for this game are published — there is no file path to quote, and none should be invented; saves stay with the console’s own storage system. What is confirmed across all three platforms is the negative: nothing syncs between them.

[!warning] Do not expect to move a save from Steam to a console or the reverse. Cross-platform progress is not a thing for this game — players report demo saves stay on the platform where they were made, and no official statement promises otherwise.

How do I back up or move my save files?

Back up the whole folder, not individual files — your progress and your configuration live together in it.

  1. Exit the game completely and give Steam a moment to finish syncing (the Steam Cloud section in the game’s Properties shows when it is done).
  2. Open %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\ and copy the entire Order of the Sinking Star folder somewhere safe — another drive, a cloud folder, wherever.
  3. To restore, exit the game first, copy the folder back over the one in Saved Games, then launch.
  4. Moving to a new PC? Sign into Steam first and let Steam Cloud restore your progress; only reach for the manual copy if something is missing after a sync.

[!warning] Never restore or move files while the game is running or Steam is mid-sync. If the cloud copy is pending, it can replace the files you just put back. Exit, let the sync finish, then copy.

Why are my saves missing?

Usually it is one of four things, and none of them means the save is gone: you are looking in the wrong place, on the wrong account, with sync turned off, or at the demo instead of the full game.

  • On Linux or Steam Deck, checking a Windows path. The Windows folder does not exist there — your saves are inside <SteamLibrary>/steamapps/compatdata/499170/pfx/.
  • A different Steam account. Saves follow the account through Steam Cloud. If you switched accounts (or someone else plays on your machine), that profile has its own progress.
  • Cloud sync off or unfinished. Check the Steam Cloud section in the game’s Properties and let a sync complete before concluding anything.
  • Demo versus full game confusion. They are separate Steam listings, and only the full game’s path is documented. If you just upgraded from the demo, progress should arrive through Steam rather than through a folder you can point at.

For what it is worth, no save corruption or save-loss reports surfaced during the demo period — the crashes players did report were on low-end hardware during Next Fest, and that hardware picture sits on the system requirements page. If you are still learning the game itself, the beginner tips cover the first hours better than any file surgery will.
